Getting to Cardiff

CONFERENCE LOCATION - Cardiff-Caerdydd, Wales

The capital city of Wales has altered beyond recognition over the past decade or so. Massive investment in the city, regeneration of its docks into a superb waterfront coupled with a vibrant arts scene, world-beating venues and a general buzz mean that Cardiff is rapidly earning its place as an exciting conference destination with an excellent track record in hosting events of all types and sizes. Cardiff also has all the facilities one would expect of a capital – excellent road, rail and air links, a wonderful all-year-round calendar of events, a fabulous range of theatres, cool clubs, friendly pubs and tasty restaurants coupled with a famously friendly community.

Within the magnificent Renaissance exterior (see top left photo on website, also cover of Conference brochure - copy on request) the City Hall has numerous large meeting rooms for the technical presentations and, in addition, very comfortable lounge areas for refreshments, networking, exhibitions and personal discussions.

The City Hall stands in the heart of Cardiff, within walking distance of a wide variety of hotels, a superb shopping centre, Cardiff Castle, the Millennium Stadium, the National Museum and Cardiff’s central train and bus stations.

The limited parking outside the City Hall is restricted to staff, delivery vehicles, disabled visitors and VIPs.

Walking around Cardiff: Delegates may walk freely around the centre of Cardiff during the day or early evening without any need to worry. A large part of the city centre is pedestrianised. A bus or taxi is advisable for visiting the St David’s Bay Waterfront area. Late at night some care is needed, as in any large city.

GETTING TO CARDIFF

Cardiff is very well located with easy road, rail or air links from all parts of the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. From Cardiff Airport there are both direct train and bus services to Cardiff City Centre. (See tables of rail times and road mileages on more detailed Travel Information page.)

International delegates may fly into London Heathrow from where there is a frequent RailAir coach service to Reading to catch the First Great Western express rail services between London Paddington and Cardiff. The coach runs every 20-30 minutes with a typical journey time of 40 minutes. The train service from Reading to Cardiff runs twice an hour at 11 and 41 minutes past each hour with a typical journey time of 1 hour 40 minutes.

International delegates planning to travel around the UK by train should consider a BritRail Pass.

Virgin Trains and some other services will require a change of train at Bristol Parkway.

City Hall and the chosen hotels are an easy walk or a very short bus or taxi ride from the adjacent Bus and Rail Stations. Take any bus to Kingsway or Greyfriars.
